Non-Epistemic Function

A purpose served by a belief that has nothing to do with whether the belief is true. Insurance billing codes, self-narratives, professional identity, market positioning, cultural vocabulary — all non-epistemic functions that can keep a wrong belief alive decades past its evidentiary expiration date.
